Wakefield's Iconic Shopping Center Faces Demolition: A Controversial Move?
Wakefield's Ridings Shopping Centre, a beloved landmark, is set to be bulldozed as part of a grand city center transformation. This decision, made by the local council, has sparked mixed reactions and raised important questions about urban development.
But here's where it gets controversial: the council aims to replace the 1980s-era shopping precinct with a new development, including housing, green spaces, and leisure facilities. Four nearby tower blocks will also meet the wrecking ball, with promises to rehome all affected residents.
Deputy council leader Jack Hemingway justifies the move, stating, "We want to create an economy with a future, and that means change." The Ridings, once a pioneering American-style mall, now stands less than two-thirds occupied, prompting the council's decision to buy and redevelop the site.
And this is the part most people miss: the council's plans are not without opposition. With Marks & Spencer relocating and Primark expected to follow suit, the council's decision to buy the center has drawn criticism. Hemingway, however, sees it as a "once-in-a-generation" opportunity to transform Wakefield's city center.
The Cathedral Quarter development will feature a new public square, green spaces, a cinema, library, museum, and ample parking. But the demolition of four tower blocks, owned by Vico Homes, has sparked concerns. Hemingway assures that all tenants will be supported and rehoused in quality accommodation within the city center.
The council's journey to acquire the Ridings has been rocky, with a previous deal falling through in 2023. Zahid Iqbal, the current owner, has agreed to sell, stating, "It's like owning the Titanic." He believes the plans are in the city's best interests, but not everyone shares this view.
Regeneration specialist Muse will lead the development, promising 1,000 new sustainable homes. Simon Dew of Muse says their plans will "bring more people and economic activity to Wakefield." The project is expected to take a decade, with no closure date set for the shopping center.
