A recent study reveals that the Western Ghats king cobra, a vulnerable species native to India, is spreading to new territories by hitching rides on trains. These venomous snakes, the longest of their kind in the world, are venturing far beyond their typical habitats in the forested interiors of Goa, India's western tourist hotspot.
Here's the twist: they're being found in areas deemed highly unsuitable for their survival. Researchers analyzed snake rescue data and local reports from 2002 to 2024 and discovered 47 localities for the king cobra in Goa, with 18 in the north and 29 in the south. Surprisingly, five of these records were near busy railway corridors, where the chances of finding these snakes were predicted to be the lowest.
But here's where it gets controversial: the researchers propose that these snakes are not just accidental passengers but may be expanding their range due to the railways. The availability of prey, such as rodents and other snakes, on goods carrier trains, along with shelter and other factors, could be attracting these reptiles.
