A groundbreaking moment in Ghana's medical history has just unfolded, with the Ghana College of Physicians and Surgeons (GCPS) inducting an impressive 350 new members and fellows into its esteemed ranks. This induction ceremony, held during the 22nd Annual General and Scientific Meeting Fellowship, was a testament to the college's commitment to advancing medical expertise in the country.
The inductees, comprising 299 members and 51 fellows, hailed from diverse medical specialties, including internal medicine, pediatrics, obstetrics and gynecology, orthopedics, and public health. Among them were three diplomats from the Faculty of Anesthesia and two fellows who had completed a post-fellowship diploma in the Faculty of Surgery and Subspecialties.
But here's where it gets controversial... The examinations for these inductees were held in March and September, indicating a rigorous selection process. And this is the part most people miss: the ceremony also celebrated graduating members from the Faculties of Family Medicine and Obstetrics and Gynaecology, showcasing the college's comprehensive approach to medical education.

Professor Richard Adanu, the Rector of GCPS, emphasized the critical need for specialist doctors in Ghana. He highlighted that by 2030, the country will require at least 6,200 additional specialists to meet its healthcare demands. Adanu expressed hope that the graduating fellows would actively contribute to this goal, training and mentoring the next generation of medical professionals.
"Our hospitals must be equipped with the best resources and guided by robust policies to uphold the highest standards of medical practice," Adanu stated. "Graduating as Fellows carries a responsibility to deliver ethical and professional services and to train doctors across all specialties."
Prof. Adanu also reaffirmed the college's vision to establish training programs in regional and teaching hospitals, focusing on seven core specialties. He acknowledged challenges, such as a limited number of trainers and inadequate specialized equipment, but highlighted the college's innovative "Level B Accreditation" system as a solution to these gaps.
The college's President, Professor Samuel Debrah, emphasized the importance of innovation and collaboration in healthcare, especially in the face of rising costs associated with modern treatments and technological advancements. He called on African governments to honor their Abuja commitment to allocate 15% of national budgets to health, a goal that remains unmet 22 years later.
