Former Springbok Barend Pieterse Joins South Africa U20s Coaching Team
Barend Pieterse, a former Springbok player, is set to join the coaching staff of the South African U20 rugby team as a lineout and breakdown consultant. This appointment comes ahead of the U20s' defense of the Junior World Cup in 2026. Pieterse brings a wealth of experience, having previously worked with the senior Springboks during their 2023 World Cup triumph and currently serving as forwards coach for the Lions.
The announcement was made by Dave Wessels, General Manager of High Performance at SA Rugby, who praised Pieterse's expertise and his natural 'fit' with the existing coaching staff. Wessels noted that Pieterse's previous collaboration with many of the Junior Springbok staff makes him an ideal addition to the team.
This move also fills a role previously held by Johann Ackermann, who is now the coach of the Bulls. Pieterse will join the U20s on their training camp in Stellenbosch in the new year, preparing for a challenging campaign that includes a trip to Georgia, the U20s Rugby Championship in Gqeberha, and the Junior World Cup defense in July.
With a strong lineup of opponents like England, New Zealand, France, and Australia, the U20s are aiming for another title victory. The team's success will depend on Pieterse's guidance and the collective efforts of the coaching staff and players.
