Get ready, Alabama! The iconic symbol that has welcomed visitors for decades is making a triumphant return! The Alabama Welcome Center, a familiar sight for travelers crossing the Tennessee state line on Interstate 65, is about to get a major upgrade.
This exciting news comes from State Rep. Andy Whitt, who shared that the final arrangements are underway to bring a replica of the legendary Saturn 1B rocket to the Ardmore welcome center. This is especially significant because it replaces the original rocket that stood proudly for over 40 years before being removed.
"The U.S. Space & Rocket Center has presented the MOU to the State of Alabama, and we’re just waiting on that final approval," Whitt told AL.com. "Once it’s in hand, the real excitement begins. This rocket is more than history — it’s Alabama’s welcome mat to the world, showing who we are and what we’ve always been capable of. The USSRC has the know-how, the ability, and the heart to help restore this iconic symbol and protect our state’s proud space heritage."
The original rocket, a beloved landmark and a favorite photo spot for countless travelers, was unfortunately demolished in November 2023. The reason? It had deteriorated to a point where restoration was no longer possible. The rocket served as a powerful symbol of Alabama's significant contributions to space exploration.
But here's where it gets controversial... The original rocket was provided by NASA, but its removal was deemed necessary due to safety concerns. The new rocket will be a meticulously crafted replica.
Funding for this impressive project has been secured, thanks to the collaborative efforts of Gov. Kay Ivey and several legislators, including State Reps. Danny Crawford and Rex Reynolds. A substantial $2 million was allocated during the 2023 legislative session, followed by an additional $5 million in the 2024 session. State Sen. Tom Butler also played a key role, sponsoring legislation to support the rocket's revival.
Whitt emphasized the importance of this project, stating, "We began working with the state legislature and the governor’s office, knowing that it’s just as important to north Alabama as it is south Alabama... Generations have loved the rocket."
